Could caterers in London receive requests for pork pie wedding cakes?

Couples looking for wedding caterers in London may be inspired to request an unusual dessert after hearing about one bride and groom's pork pie cake.

Charlene Killeen and Anthony Doherty entered a competition featured in the Shields Gazette to win a one-of-a-kind wedding cake made by Dickinson's Butchers.

The pair composed a poem explaining how the delicacy would complete their big day and make it extra special.

Ms Killeen described how she "had to enter" when she heard about the competition as both she and her fiance "like to do things a bit different".

The 31-year-old composed The Poem of the Pie with the help of her father James Young and clnched the number one prize.

Comprised of a 12 inch pork and egg base and a seven inch port and pickle middle, as well as a pork pie top layer, the cake weighs in at 11.5 kg.

The three-tier creation is made from a secret family recipe and will be big enough to feed 100 people.

Ms Killeen commented: "The cake is already the talk of the wedding, it's going to go down a storm!

"We're going to have cupcakes as well, but everyone is opting for the pork pie."

The bride and groom are set to tie the knot on July 7th 2012 in South Shields after announcing their engagement earlier this year.

In-keeping with their flare for the unconventional, Ms Killeen proposed to Mr Doherty just before Valentine's Day after six years together.

The bride-to-be concluded: "We've never done things the traditional way, so pork pie wedding cake is going to be perfect."

Elsewhere, newlyweds Melanie Edgar and Andrew Higgins recently told the South Wales Echo how they opted to get hitched dressed as cartoon characters Woody and Jessie from Toy Story.

The couple's friends and family also joined in the fantasy theme, with Batman, Tinkerbell and the Queen of Hearts all turning up to the ceremony.
